One of the most important factors in ensuring said competency is having supervision experiences that further promote the growth and development of counselors centering an inclusive lens (Pope-Davis & Coleman, 1997). As therapists, we’re trained to respond to suicidality with carceral approaches that further harm marginalized clients and may inadvertently perpetuate state-based trauma and violence (Drustrup, Kivlighan, 2022). Recent shifts towards abolition seek to replace oppressive systems such as prisons and police with life-affirming institutions such as accessible housing and healthcare (Kaba, 2021). This training will support clinicians in developing an anti-carceral approach to supporting clients experiencing suicidality. Together we’lle explore case studies to enhance practical tools in supporting clients experiencing suicidal thoughts.
